What Is Agar Stone Block?

Agar Stone Block is a penetrating sealer that creates an invisible, breathable barrier within the micro-porous surface of uncoated natural stone, pavers and tiles. This barrier repels dirt, stains and spills, so the stone retains its original appearance, and gives you time to mop up liquid spillages before they can stain the surface.

Key Benefits of Agar Stone Block

  • Repels surface stains and dirt
  • Does not change the existing appearance of stone or tiles
  • Makes ongoing cleaning easier
  • Ideal for use both indoors and outdoors
  • Long-lasting, durable protection
  • Practically odourless
  • Environmentally preferable, water-based formula
  • Not classified as hazardous, non-flammable

How Does Agar Stone Block Work?

The formula is built on fluorochemical polymers carried in a water-based dispersion. When dry, these polymers cross-link within the stone’s pores to form a barrier to soil penetration, giving exceptional resistance to oil and water-based stains, dirt, graffiti, efflorescence and other surface deposits. Unlike a topcoat sealer or floor polish, Stone Block does not form a surface film ‑ it penetrates into the stone itself, so it does not change the stone’s existing gloss or sheen.

How to Apply Agar Stone Block

Before sealing, remove any glue, grout, factory finish, old polish or other soiling with an appropriate stain remover, then rinse the surface and allow it to dry completely. Only apply Agar Stone Block to a clean, fully dry floor.

Apply Agar Stone Block neat (undiluted) on most floors using a clean mop, a lambswool applicator, or a synthetic polish applicator fringe with handle. On glossy, low-porosity stone or tile, dilute 1:1 with soft water instead. Apply evenly and keep the surface wet for 3-5 minutes. Very porous surfaces may need several coats ‑ always let the previous coat dry completely before applying the next.

Stone PorosityCoverage Rate
Low porosity1L per 100 m²
Medium porosity1L per 50 m²
High porosity1L per 25 m²

Be cautious when walking on treated floors while still wet, as they will be slippery until dry. Agar Stone Block is a durable, long-lasting treatment rather than a fixed-interval product ‑ reapplication is only needed if the surface shows wear from abrasion. Note: it may leave a white residue on dark, polished stone, which can be removed by towelling or buffing.

What Surfaces Can Agar Stone Block Be Used On?

Surfaces that benefit from its strong protection include marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, bluestone, slate, terrazzo, brick, concrete, quarry tiles, sadler tiles and concrete or terracotta pavers. Beyond floors and walls, it can be applied to countertops, kitchen benches, bars and even sculptural pieces, and it is often found in hotel foyers, shopping centres, building facades, balconies, paved areas, kitchens and bathrooms.

Agar Stone Block is designed for stone surfaces with fine pores. Stones or tiles with large visible pores, gas bubbles or crevices ‑ such as extremely porous sandstone or bluestone ‑ may trap dirt in these cavities, and Stone Block will not fill large pores or crevices. Speak to our team for advice on the best product for these more porous surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Agar Stone Block

What is Agar Stone Block used for?

Agar Stone Block is a penetrating sealer that creates an invisible, breathable barrier inside natural stone, pavers and tiles, repelling dirt, stains and spills while retaining the stone’s original appearance.

Is Agar Stone Block diluted with water?

It is used neat (undiluted) on most floors. On glossy, low-porosity stone or tile, dilute 1:1 with soft water instead.

How is Agar Stone Block applied?

Apply evenly with a clean mop, lambswool applicator or synthetic polish applicator fringe, keeping the surface wet for 3-5 minutes. Very porous surfaces may need several coats, letting each coat dry fully before the next.

What is the coverage rate for Agar Stone Block?

Coverage depends on stone porosity: approximately 1L per 100 m² on low-porosity stone, 1L per 50 m² on medium porosity, and 1L per 25 m² on high-porosity stone.

Does Agar Stone Block change the appearance of stone?

No. Agar Stone Block does not change the existing appearance, gloss or sheen of stone or tiles, since it penetrates into the surface rather than forming a coating on top of it.

How often does Agar Stone Block need to be reapplied?

Agar Stone Block is long-lasting and does not have a fixed reapplication schedule. It only needs to be reapplied if the treated surface starts to show wear from abrasion.

What surfaces can Agar Stone Block be used on?

Agar Stone Block is suitable for granite, bluestone, marble, terrazzo, limestone, brick, slate, pavers, quarry tiles, sandstone and concrete, used on floors, walls, kitchen benches, countertops, bars and outdoor areas. It is designed for fine-pored stone and is not suitable for stones with large visible pores or crevices.

What size does Agar Stone Block come in?

Agar Stone Block is available in a 5L size (STO5), stocked by Nova Cleaning Supplies.

How do I use Agar Stone Block?

Remove glue, grout, factory finish, or old polishes and other soilage using the appropriate stain remover (such as ULTRASTRIP at 1 in 10 for old polishes).
